It’s WipItUp time again. And I’ve got some great WIPs that are coming out this year. Next week I’ll start posting from the books coming out on the 19th, but this week, I’m giving you a snippet from a novel that came out one week ago – Vespar. This is from Marcolm’s Point of view.
One moment he was walking, silently cursing the fact that his car died the previous summer and he hadn’t been able to afford to replace it, and the next, someone slammed into him from the side and his arms windmilled as he tried to keep his balance.
Just before he splatted onto the wet grass, a strong hand grabbed his and yanked him back up. He looked up to thank the person for stopping him from making a royal mess of himself and his books. But as he spotted who it was—Mr. Hottie—his words died on his lips. “Oh” was all he got out.
“I apologize,” Hottie said in a deep voice that matched his size and bulk. “I wasn’t looking where I was going.”
“Join the club,” Marcolm said with a chuckle. He hiked his book bag farther up his left shoulder and realized his right hand was still clasped inside Hottie’s. “And I guess one good turn deserves another, huh?” At Hottie’s confused expression, he tried to explain. “I knocked into you yesterday, and today you knocked into me.” There was no response, so he blurted out the first thing that came to mind. “My name’s Marc. What’s yours?”
Hottie blinked as though bemused. No doubt Marcolm was coming across as a twink. He’d just recently come out of the closet, and with his thin build and youthful looks, he was one of the twinkiest twinks around. “I’m Vespar.”
Vespar? That was an interesting name. “On your way to campus?” Marcolm asked as he turned his body back in the direction he needed to go. But his hand was still clasped firmly in Vespar’s. Not that he was complaining.
“Yes,” Vespar said. He suddenly released Marcolm’s hand as though stung.
Damn. Marcolm must have given away his gay status. Was he too young? Too effeminate? Or was it just the fact he was gay?
Special ops turned professional killer, Vespar McKauley is hired to take out Marcolm Rogers, son of his employer’s worst enemy. But Marc isn’t like any hit he’s ever done. He’s just twenty-one, he goes to a private university studying English Lit, and for fun he plays computer games with his friends. No drugs, no partying, no crime. The day he bumps into Marc and looks into his azure eyes, the world drops out from under him.
With his father in the Chicago Crime Syndicate, Marc and his mom have stayed out of the limelight, hiding from those that might harm them. He figures he’s safe at a small liberal arts university all the way across the country. Only midway through his senior year, he feels eyes on him and the shadows encroaching. Just as he’s about to run, he meets Vespar and experiences an instant attraction. When Vespar tells him he’s in danger and offers to protect him, Marc wants to believe him. But he’s been hunted before, and this time he isn’t sure he’ll get away. Especially when he finds out he is Vespar’s target.
