December 10th ~ Texas
Walking through the doorway Dusty Brandon held back the sigh that wanted to leave his lips as the conversation in the room stalled slightly. It had been that way ever since he came out years ago. His whole damned family never knew what to say when he was around. Except for his Uncle Larry who winked at him across the room.
“‘Bout time you got here!” Larry bellowed.
Grinning, he strode through the throngs of uncles, aunts, and cousins over to a man he loved. “Happy Holidays, Uncle,” he said, giving him a hug.
“Same to you. How’s business?” Larry asked as the conversations in the room began to pick up again.
“Good. Have several new deals in the works. Found out about a company in Seattle that might be worth lookin’ into. They would add a lot. And life’s good.”
It was just the quirk of an eyebrow that told him his uncle was not in the least convinced. “Sure it is. Any new man on the horizon?”
Grimacing, Dusty shook his head. “Naw. Last one was too taxing. Needed a break.”
With one of his smiles, the kind that let you know he was up to something, Larry picked up a couple glasses of champagne and handed him one. “Sell that to someone who’ll buy it, Nephew. Now let’s celebrate the season. I hear Carilee has somethin’ to announce.”
Snorting, Dusty took a swig of the expensive champagne. “Probably that her daughter is expectin’. She loves rubbin’ that in Mama’s nose every chance she can get.”
Even worse, four pregnancies in the family were announced, meaning four of his cousins, all younger than he was, were expecting a child. “It could be worse,” Larry mused as they watched Dusty’s mother have to smile and congratulate another of her sisters on a new grandchild.
“How?” Dusty was gay. He had known it for years and when he came out, it was because he needed to do it. It never occurred to him how hard it would be on his own mother. As her only child, he had not understood just how important being a grandmother was to her and hearing her only son was gay had been hard enough. Having the other women in the family gloat over it every time their daughter or son announced a new baby downright pissed him off.
“You could have tried to hide who you are and got someone pregnant before you came out.”
Musing on that, Dusty nodded. “Don’t think that woulda’ worked. No girl would get me that excited.”
With a snort, Larry swallowed the last of his champagne and grabbed another glass. “You need a good man, Dusty. Go find one.”
Raising an eyebrow, Dusty took another sip from his own glass. “Not that easy, Uncle. It isn’t just findin’ a good gay man. It’s findin’ a good gay man who is also the yin to my yang.” Quickly, Larry glanced across the room and his eyes softened and filled with such love that Dusty immediately knew who he was looking at.
‘You’ll find him, m’boy. Just like I found your Aunt Letta, you’ll find the man of your dreams.”
The splutter that came from Dusty’s throat clearly stated what he thought of that sentence.
“Ya’ don’t believe me?” his uncle asked in amusement. “Wanna’ make a bet?”
“No,” Dusty stated clearly. “I know about your bets, Uncle. You always win ’em.”
“Damn straight. ‘Cause I know what I’m talkin’ about.” Reaching into his pocket, Larry pulled out a quarter. “Here’s a freebie, m’boy, since this is the holidays. Heads and you’ll meet the man for you within the next week. Tails, it’ll take a year.” Tossing the coin into the air, Larry caught and deftly flipped it over onto the back of his other hand. “Your decision?”
Figuring he had nothing to lose, Dusty nodded and watched as his uncle removed his hand. At that moment Letta walked up and looked around his shoulder. “Ooh, what did your uncle get you to bet this time, Dusty? You know he always wins.”
December 15th – Montana
Tossing his briefcase onto the chair, Blake Loughton pulled off his tie and collapsed onto the uncomfortable motel bed. “I’m getting too old for this,” he groaned, twitching a little as he tried to get comfortable on top of the plastic-feeling blanket the cheap place used. Of his five-day workweek, he spent all of them either flying or meeting with employees and usually spent his nights just like tonight: bored out of his mind in a hotel or motel whose walls were so thin he could hear all the cars go by outside.
A few years ago that wasn’t so much of a problem. But now he was approaching forty far too quickly for his peace of mind and it seemed like nightly, the beds became more uncomfortable and the walls, thinner. As his stomach rumbled, he forced himself to his feet and opened the couple of drawers in the dresser that sat underneath the television set, a piece of technology that should have been retired along with bell-bottom pants. Finally he found a few delivery menus, picked up the phone, and ordered a pizza with everything on it. Tossing the menu back in the drawer, he quickly changed into lounge pants and a t-shirt, pulling his laptop out of his briefcase to give him something to do.
By the time the pizza arrived, he finished looking over the next day’s contracts he would need to discuss with the salesmen before heading home. Lounging on the bed, he made it through two pieces before throwing the rest of it out. “That has to be the worst pizza I’ve ever tasted,” he said with a grimace, lying back on the uncomfortable bed and staring at the television. A cable box sat atop the old set, but he just wasn’t interested in watching anything. Glancing at the clock, he realized it was also way too early to go to bed.
That left the internet.
His intense work schedule left him without much time to date and no time at all to get his needs taken care of, so he had taken to putting his profile on multiple dating sites. Lately, his focus had been on websites that specialized in alternative lifestyles, hoping to meet someone a little more like him. If he did not have the time in real life to get what he needed, he hoped at least to find it online. Quickly he began to run through the different sites, looking for anyone new that might look interesting. Being heteroflexible, he was open to a partner from either gender, though he did tend to pay more attention to the women than the men.
After all, if by chance he did develop a good relationship with someone, he might want to take it into reality at some point. And it would be simpler if it was with a woman.
By the time he was at the fifth site, his eyes scanned quickly over anyone new. As his finger moved the mouse to move to the next site, his gaze was caught by the name KeepingItReal. Reading quickly through the man’s profile, Blake found himself interested in a way he had not been in a long while and before he could think, shot of a quick message introducing himself.
To his surprise, three minutes later a little message box popped up from KeepingtItReal.
