The island looked huge from her vantage point. Straight in front of her was a stretch of white sand that went both to her right and left as far as she could see. Beyond the sand, bright green trees and shrubs with flowers in more colors than she could have imagined rose up to the sky. Her eyes blinked at the brilliance of the hues in front of her. She had never seen anything so vibrant. Back home, even green was gray. Here it was an intense color, better than in any book she had seen. “Wow.”

A chuckle behind her reminded her she was not alone. “I’m sorry, Mr. Markham,” she said sheepishly. “I’ve just never seen anything so beautiful.”

He nodded. “I agree. Isle Irȃ has a spectacular beauty. And please, call me Peter.” He waved in the direction of the sand and began to walk along the jetty toward it. Hastening to not be left behind, she followed along.

“I thought this was called Isle Maxim,” she said as they walked along the jetty.

“Isle Maxim is the name my great-grandfather gave the island after he purchased it; he wanted to name it after the castle. Isle Irȃ was its original name.”

Feeling the warm sun on her head and shoulders as well as the humidity in the air, Seri was glad she had packed her summer clothes. Constance had tried to convince her to pack winter clothing, though why she wasn’t sure. But given that Peter was wearing loose linen shorts and a white cotton button-down shirt, she knew winter clothes would have been a bad idea.

As she stepped on to the soft sand, Seri wanted to take her shoes off and dig her toes in. But she did not want to make Peter wait, so she hurried along in his wake. The moment they entered a path that led them through the greenery, the warmth was not gone as much as changed. The sun no longer beat down upon her, but the humidity became more oppressive.

“I think you will like it here, Miss Jones,” Peter said as they walked along. “The entire island is safe so you can walk anywhere when you are not embroiled in the library.” His tone was amused, making her laugh.

“I love it so far. And please call me Seri. It’s short for Serendipity, which is a mouthful.”

He chuckled in response.

“I’m looking forward to checking out the library. I couldn’t find much about the collection, but there was one reference online that said your oldest manuscript is from four forty-nine B.C.?” Erotic fiction had become a fascination of hers from her first taste of it years before and added to her prevalent book addiction, she now had an unquenchable thirst for it. Of course, her parents were unaware of the library’s genre. If she had told them, they never would have allowed her to come. In fact, she would probably be at some religious camp being told over and over that erotica was the devil’s work or some such nonsense.

Castle Maxim’s library was fascinating to her. She had assumed when she read her first short erotic story that they were a relatively recent book genre. Then she found Lady Chatterly’s Lover and the Marquis de Sade’s works and her desire for erotica combined with her interest in how people’s minds worked and why society acted the way it did and her passion for all erotic information was formed. To think of that amazing library not too far from where she walked right now and to know that soon she would see it was incredibly exciting…and a bit titillating as well. Of course there would be much she would not be able to read as most of it was probably not in English, but she would do her best.

Peter laughed. “You and Jinny will get along just fine. She spends half her life either in the library or hunting down additional manuscripts to add to it.”

As much as she enjoyed this trip through the island, Seri was beginning to wonder how much longer it would be till they got to their destination. How large could the island be, anyway?
