When I write a series, especially one that is bound around a community concept, I like a series logo. That logo states clearly what series the book is in.
Where the design writes the story
Sometimes those logos come together easily, sometimes they take a lot of work and sweat. Two of the series that I’m launching next year are about communities based upon BDSM and all of its subsets. One of them – Elan Isle – is contemporary, the other – Wylde KingDom – paranormal. They will both have M/M and M/F pairings. When I was designing the covers, I lucked out in the paranormal version as I was just messing around and this cover concept came to me. I created 6 covers and that’s when the story concepts came to me. The covers are very unique and I loved them. And in that case, the design created the story.
Where the story writes the design
However, when I wrote Elan Isle, I wrote the stories first and then had to start working on the cover design. That was a pain. Because I wanted something unique, just like with Wylde KingDom, but I didn’t want them to look the same, either. I tried cover after cover and kept striking out. And then… I remembered something. When I was taking art, I was always drawn to angles and sharp edges. So I tossed out how I’d designed book covers before and pulled out a tablet. I let my artistic mind flow and came up with 7 cover possibilities. I played with them in Photoshop and 3 of them worked, one of them especially. After several tweaks, I had the design.
*And I can’t wait to show you all the covers but you’ll need to wait until 2017*
However, back to the logo…
I find it amusing that while the Wylde KingDom covers were easy to design, the logo took a lot longer. I tossed out a good forty to fifty ideas before the perfect one came together. On the other hand, while the Elan Isle covers took forever to figure out, the logo came to me quickly and far in advance of getting the cover concept I liked.
Go figure 😉
Anyway, I’ve shown the Elan Isle logo on Facebook, but I figured I’d show you the logos/banners I’ve got for those series. The book covers for the 4 Elan Isle books and 3 Wylde KingDom books coming out next year will be revealed in January. I will also be revealing the covers for the first two Rab Renroc books and for a Bree Cariad Love Conquers All novel in early 2017. But for now, here are the logos for Elan Isle and Wylde KingDom.
