The Binds That Tie comes out on Sep 22nd and I’m excited for its release. In this scene, Kalen and Joaquin have run into one another at Steel Door, a BDSM club. Joaquin speaks first.
“Greg says this stuff is fine and not sick or anything. But what those guys did that night…”
“If you knew the rules beforehand you could have walked away before it happened. There wouldn’t have been a problem. All the other guys knew the rules. So the fault was with them.”
Joaquin grunted in what sounded like disgust. “My ex-brother-in-law is at fault. He got me into that.”
“Sounds like there’s a reason he’s an ex-brother-in-law.”
For a brief moment, Joaquin broke into a wide smile. It lit up his eyes. “You have no idea. Gerald is a piece of work.” He glanced over Kalen’s shoulder and turned an even deeper pink. “How can people walk around naked and not… not…”
“Not be shamed by it?” Kalen said with amusement. “First off, coming to a BDSM club means at some point, a person is going to get undressed. Most people are embarrassed at first. But when you’ve done it a few times, you realize it’s not that big of a deal. For some of them, it’s a source of pride—a way of saying, I can be myself here in all my glory. Fuck you, if you don’t like it.”
Joaquin took another sip from his glass. “That’s what I love about being Layla,” he said quietly. “I can go behind that mask and totally be myself.”
“So you do understand. Now imagine being totally yourself without a mask.”
