Spanking vs BDSM? 8

Okay, I must admit, sometimes it is very confusing how to differentiate between a spanking and BDSM book/movie/whatever. I always classified “The Secretary” as a distinct Holllywood-esque BDSM film, but just two days ago someone called it a Spanko Movie.

After careful consideration and an awful lot of time NOT thinking about it, I’ve come to the conclusion: Some of it is in the eye of the beholder. It used to be that I classified all books with a dom/sub leaning as BDSM. Then I read some DD ones. Had to change my definition to dom/sub + erotic play that included more than just spanking.

But now? I’m thinking if the BDSM book contains a lot of spanking, it can actually be classified as a spanking book. Spanking is a large fetish within the B&D (Bondage and Discipline) sector of BDSM and can be found in a multitude of stories, novels, novellas… So would the spanking within a B&D relationship classify it as more spanking in a reader’s eyes if there is no S&M involved?

Maybe more importantly, does it matter? In the non-sales realm, no it doesn’t, but when it comes to selling a book, how you classify it does in fact matter.

I classify my newest novella Through the Library Door as a Paranormal BDSM Erotic Romance, but I could just as well have classified it as a Paranormal Spanking Erotic Romance as Nicholas loves spanking implements, though the ending includes mention of a few more BDSM-related toys.

There are definitely a lot less BDSM-esque attitudes and play than there is in my upcoming Paranormal BDSM Erotic Romance Bane of My Existence, where quite a bit of the book takes place inside a fetish club, which is coming out in May.

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand I think I’m back to being confused. Hmm, actually being confused isn’t such a bad place. There are unicorns and faeries over here; being an author is a great thing – you can actually pay attention to the fantasy elements. All right. I will stay in confusionland for a bit.

Meanwhile, don’t judge a book completely by its publisher/author-named category. For all you know, the book might be right up your alley.
